Chapter 8
Meadow pulled the tissues closer to her as she looked at the photo albums she’d brought from home. Yesterday, as Pierce had been going through the house, he’d found four more—two each, belonging to her parents. Those were the ones that she was looking at now. Tomorrow, she thought, she’d look through hers and Danny’s.
“What’s going on?” She looked up at Ian when he entered the dining room where she was sitting. “Honey, if those pictures upset you that much, don’t look at them.”
“I was remembering the day that they were taken.” He sat next to her at the table, and she pointed to the one of her and Danny on the water slide at a park. “Danny was terrified that we were both going to drown. He was such a worrier. I didn’t even know that my parents took this one. It shows how scared he was.”
“Your parents took a lot of pictures.” He nodded to the five albums she’d yet to look through. “I’d tell you to leave them there until you’re stronger, but I don’t know that I’d be any stronger ever if anything like that happened to my family.”
“These are just for the last year that we were together. Each of us would get one of those cameras that you have to get the pictures developed each time we explored someplace. Then we’d put the ones that meant so much to us in an album. When the end of the year would roll around, all of us would go over all the other pictures, just to remember what things we did as a family. I’ll have to look, but I bet the other books are in the safe in the basement.” Ian loved that idea. “It was my mom’s idea. She thought that we’d have a wonderful hour just looking at the pictures and talking about them. But sometimes we’d still be looking them over well into the new year. It was something that we did every year since I was born. I didn’t take any pictures then, but I did when I was about two.”
“I bet those were great pictures too.” She wished that she could have shown him some of them. Meadow decided that she was going to have to find them soon and bring them home. Ian reached for the album that had been Danny’s. “May I look at these?”
Nodding, Meadow braced her heart for whatever he found in them. Danny had started decorating his albums the first year that he’d had one. He’d been four at the time. As soon as Ian opened the book up, she stared back at the picture of her baby brother.
“He was such a good kid.” Ian might have said something, but she was too far into her grief of losing such a big part of her heart to hear him. “When he was born, my parents thought for sure that I’d be upset to have such an age difference between us. At first I thought he was just a blob that was sucking the fun out of my life.
